The
Do's and Don'ts:
Do:
Keep an eye on your revs. When riding a bike that is capable of nearly
200 mph it is hard not to open it right up and scream around the course.
However, doing this from a standing start can cause the bike to wheelie.
This is all great fun, but when your front wheel lifts it is very tricky
to change direction. If you combine these ingredients with a sharp corner
you end up with a serving
of gravel delicately served through the cracks in your bloodstained helmet.
Only wheelie when there's a long straight ahead.
Make the most of the tuning options. If you persevere with the facilities
available you can shave literally seconds off your lap times. Seconds
are a valuable thing when it comes to racing superbikes. Courses vary
from winding nightmares where you barely get the chance to straighten
up, to more straightforward speed circuits. If you tune the bike accordingly,
with shorter gear ratios
for the winding circuits, then you'll perform far, far better.
Look behind you. The rear view option is a very useful thing, as anyone
who's been dismounted by the bike behind them while turning into a comer
can tell you. The computer opponents are very good at keeping to the racing
line, and woe betide anyone who gets in their way. A quick peek over your
shoulder and these collisions will be a thing of the past.
Don't:
Try to steer on the grass. Without, that is, closing the throttle. A bike
is a difficult thing to balance at the best of times, over gravel it is
nearly impossible. By braking, easing of the throttle and turning with
the engine idle you slow the bike and avoid a time-wasting doughnut. If
you come of the track follow these instructions to get straight back in
the race.
Brake during a corner. This is never a good idea in any vehicle, as the
back wheel tries to overtake you. On a Honda Superbike this skid will
almost always be at high speeds meaning a prompt introduction of your
backside to the gravel. Do your braking before the corner then accelerate
as you come out of it. Never ever bottle it as you will always come off.
Play dodgems. Your bike will not appreciate it and will soon be smoking
like Dot Cotton. The bikes are very delicate machines. Avoid any collisions
by staying well back from the crowd. Better to wait than risk a collision
while overtaking, especially through the corners. Patience is definitely
a virtue in Castrol Honda Superbike 2000.
